Mamdani Celebrates Ramadan With Incarcerated Suspects at Rikers Island. What About the Victims? – RedState

New York City’s Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated the Muslim holy month of Ramadan like any normal person would: by breaking bread with hardened criminals and suspects at the notorious Rikers Island prison.
Wait, actually, most people wouldn’t celebrate a holiday on Rikers, let alone set foot there if they could avoid it. Zohran, however, dances to the beat of his own drummer, which is why on Monday he visited incarcerated Muslims and broke the fast with them. (So people of other faiths have been denied a seat at the table? You’re asking for a friend.)
He spoke of “the night that will remain engraved in my memory for some time” in a message published Friday on social networks:
Earlier this week, I broke the fast at Rikers Island with detained New Yorkers, Department of Corrections staff, Commissioner Stanley Richards, and Council Member Yusef Salaam.

His tweet continues:
It was a night that will stay with me for a while. People share what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making room for each person’s dignity, even in the most difficult times.
In a system too often defined by what it takes, it reminded me of what it means to give: mercy, dignity, and humanity.
May we extend this mercy as far as possible. Eid Mubarak to all.
Mamdani has been a strong advocate for prison reform and has pledged to close the infamously dangerous and crumbling Rikers (although he once opposed building new prisons to replace the facility, and his plans to find alternatives are pervasive).
We probably know his real fantasy: he would like to take Rikers and NOT replace it with anything.
One thing I always notice about these “justice reform” types is that they never seem to put on such shows for crime victims and their families. Instead, Zohran would prefer to have a meal with a group that almost certainly has one or more vicious criminals among them.

Predictably, not everyone was impressed by the socialist’s latest punch. Columnist Daniella Greenbaum Davis had the same question as me: What about the victims?
visiting people in prison is admirable, but just wondering if you have also visited their victims/their victims’ families? It seems like there’s a strange, progressive determination to reverse victimization that I can’t understand.

New York resident and award-winning crime writer Daniel Friedman couldn’t hide his disdain:
You have to be an absolute monster to get sent to Rikers Island these days; almost all offenders are released on recognizance while awaiting trial since New York’s bail reform in 2018.

Rikers offenders all have a long history of doing things so horrible that even New York’s woke, pro-crime judges and prosecutors don’t want to be responsible for what they will do if they let them go.
Mamdani came out to serve these murderers and rapists a catered dinner with rapist city council member Yusuf Salaam. He loves these people and hates the Jews.
That pretty much sums it up.
Editor’s note: New York City is now facing the consequences of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s socialist takeover.
