Man killed in Brooklyn lounge mass shooting tried to stop fight, may also have opened fire

One of the men killed during the mass shooting on Sunday in a Brooklyn lounge was a “peacemaker” trying to break up a fight in the crowded club, said a brother and a friend – but the investigators allowed him to have any of the shooters.
Jamel Andre Childs, 35, was initially trying to cool the temperatures inside Taste of the City Lounge on Franklin Ave. In Crown Heights, a role he often took when he saw a situation about to become violent, said friend Rajawn Philips.
“He was a cool guy,” said Philips.49, who works in a smoke store next to the club. “You know when you go to clubs, do you have the crowd of Knuckleheads? It is himself”, as, cool the F – K. “… He is one of those like:” Stop this sand S – T. “”
The child’s brother described it in similar terms.
“He was trying to stop a fight. … It looks exactly like him,” said Richard Childs Jr. “Jamel wanted to save the world. He wanted to save everyone.”
Despite this, a preliminary investigation shows that the children and a 19 -year -old man also killed in the shots were one of the club’s shooters, a police source said.

A 27 -year -old was also killed in the gang -related shooting, who involved up to four shooters, police said. Nine other people have been shot and injured.
The source said that one of the victims is a member of the National Folk Gang.
“I was not there and I don’t think he was one of the shooters,” said the child’s brother to the Daily News.
Childs has been free in parole since 2023, after being sentenced to almost eight years in prison for a conviction for flight in 2018 in Brooklyn, according to the files.
Philips said violence had started as a two -for -two fight between people in two larger groups in the club.
“These are people who have been strengthening for some time,” he said.
“They said that when the argument occurred for the first time, [Childs] was the one who arrested him. They continued to party. Then he jumped, “said Philips.” I think two people still didn’t see their eyes and they ended up jumping. “”
A few months earlier, in June, Childs and his mother showed up to surprise his young niece to her diploma.
“The family is in mourning,” said Richard Childs. “He’s a big brother, a big friend.”
