Map Shows Where Democrats Are Overperforming in Special Elections

Democrats surpass the margin of the former vice-president Kamala Harris in 2024 during the special elections in the United States.
The president of the National Democratic Committee (DNC) said Ken Martin Nowsweek The party is “determined to build infrastructure and power across the country and it begins with these critical elections in November”.
Nowsweek also contacted the National Republican Committee to comment by e-mail.
Why it matters
Democrats hope to regain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the mid-term elections in 2026 and are increasingly optimistic about the chances of a 2018 “blue wave” fueled by the decreasing approval rating of President Donald Trump.
The results of the special elections, some of which have seen democrats outperforming Harris by 50 or more, fuel this optimism. Although the special elections are not necessarily predictive of the way in which the mid-term take place, the Democrats see these results as showing a very motivated base in the middle of Trump’s second term.
What to know
Tuesday evening, the Democrats delivered their last outperformance in the 11th district of the Virginia Congress. Democrat James Walkinshaw won the special elections to replace the deceased member of the Gerry Connolly Congress with approximately 50 points in the District based in Fairfax.

The district has long been safe democratic while the suburbs of DC of Northern Virginia moved to the left. But Walkinshaw’s performance marks a larger margin than Harris transported the district by last November. She only won it by 34 points – roughly the same margin by which Connolly won the re -election.
This is part of a broader trend of winning democrats by stronger margins than Harris last November across the country.
The strongest outperformance of the Democrats comes from the 22nd district of the New York Senate, where Democrat Sam Sutton won by 35 points in a special election in May. Trump brought the seat of 55 points in November, which makes a surformance of 90 points. The district is located in South Brooklyn and includes Orthodox Jewish communities. Although Trump has performed well there, he was more open to Democrats.
During a special election of August for the 34th district of the Senate of Rhode Island, based on North Providence, the Democrat Stefano Famiglietti won a margin of 67 points – carried out on the fringes of 11 points from Harris last November.
Meanwhile, Democrat Amanda Clinton won an equally strong victory in a special Oklahoma election in June. She carried her district based in Tulsa of 69 points, compared to the victory of 19 points of Harris.
Democrats outperformed in 34 special elections, while the Republicans outperformed five special Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. There have been four other special non -partisan elections in Louisiana and Mississippi.
What people say
Martin said Nowsweek:: “At the start of the fall elections season, the DNC is entirely on the bridge to win the crucial elections of Virginia, New Jersey, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the Californian elections in November. DNC undertakes to build infrastructure and power across the country and it starts with these critical elections in November.”
Ticket analyst with loven Lakshya Jain wrote to X in March: “The main involvement of all these Hullabalo special elections is that the Republicans are starting to achieve as Obama 2008, many of their new voters simply do not care about non -presidential elections – and this generally makes a half -rate mid -term on the participation rate.”
What happens next
Two major elections organized this year are considered to be Bellwethers keys for mid -term – these are the races of governors of New Jersey and Virginia. Democrats are being surveyed in these two races, but the Republicans are still optimistic about their chances, especially in New Jersey.
