Controversial Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene apologized Sunday for her role in the country’s “toxic politics” and said she would do things differently in the future in hopes that others would do the same, including President Trump.

The simmering conflict between the once unapologetic loyalist and the president came to a head Friday when Trump withdrew his support and cut ties with Greene on his Truth Social platform. He nicknamed the Georgia congresswoman “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene,” called her a “crazy man” and a “disgrace to our great Republican Party,” and said he would support the primary challengers.

“The most hurtful thing he said, which is absolutely false, was he called me a traitor, and that’s extremely false,” Greene told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union,” her first interview since the argument. “And these are the kind of words used that can radicalize people against me and put my life in danger. »

Bash noted that Greene had defended such rhetoric when targeting other people and was only calling it out now that she was putting her own safety at risk.

“I think it’s a fair criticism,” Greene responded. “And I would like to humbly say that I am sorry for having participated in this toxic policy. It is very bad for our country.”

Greene accused survivors of school shootings of being “paid actors,” espoused QAnon conspiracy theories, and even accused what became known as “Jewish space lasers” of manipulating the weather.

“I am only responsible for myself, my own words and actions,” Greene told Bash. “I’ve been working on this a lot lately, putting down the knives in politics. I really want to see people being kind to each other, and we need to find a new way forward that centers the American people.”

She added that she hopes others, and one person in particular, will follow suit.

“I’m leading the way with my own example and I hope President Trump can do the same,” she told Bash.

Greene’s insistence on disclosing the Epstein files, her break with the president’s foreign policy approach and her criticism of Republican senators for refusing to negotiate health care with their Democratic colleagues during the government shutdown, as well as other divisions have apparently fueled Trump’s anger. Nonetheless, Greene said her support for the president’s stated agenda has not wavered.

“I support him and his administration, and I support them in fulfilling the campaign promises we made to the American people,” Greene told Bash. “Unfortunately, this all comes down to the Epstein files, and it’s shocking. I stand with these women, I stand with rape victims, I stand with children who are in terrible situations of sexual abuse, and I stand with survivors of trafficking and those who are trapped in sex trafficking. And I will not apologize for that.”
