Massive Microsoft outage reported by thousands of users

Thousands of Microsoft users reported an outage Thursday afternoon.
According to Downdetector, Microsoft 365, Exchange, Outlook, Teams, and the Microsoft Store were all offline, with reports peaking shortly before 3:30 p.m. ET.
More than 15,000 people reported problems, 62% of them with Microsoft Exchange, the tech giant’s platform that provides business email, scheduling and collaboration programs.
“We are investigating a potential issue affecting multiple Microsoft 365 services, including Outlook, Microsoft Defender, and Microsoft Purview,” a Microsoft customer service account posted on social media.
“We have identified a portion of the service infrastructure in North America that is not processing traffic as expected,” reads a follow-up article.
Around 4:15 p.m., Microsoft said it had “restored the affected infrastructure to a healthy state” but that “additional load balancing is required to mitigate the impact.”
“We are directing traffic to alternative infrastructure to achieve recovery,” the company said.
The outage comes a week after Verizon experienced service outages across the country, leading the company to offer customers a $20 credit.
