Massive Vehicle Explosion Rocks Bronx, Injures 7 Firefighters – What Caused It? – RedState
A massive explosion, apparently coming from a vehicle, rocked New York’s Bronx borough Wednesday evening, injuring at least seven firefighters and sending several to hospitals, some with severe burns. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
The size of the explosion certainly raises questions. The explosion occurs seven seconds into this video:

Witnesses described hearing a powerful explosion that shook the area. The exact number of injuries remains unclear and authorities are still working to determine the cause of the explosion. This is an evolving situation.
The fire lit up the night:
“There was a lot of trash and debris on the sidewalk that was on fire. There were a few cars on fire. And shortly after we arrived on scene, there was some sort of explosion, a large ball of fire,” department Chief John Esposito said at a news conference Wednesday evening.

Although several firefighters were seriously injured, fortunately no deaths were reported at this time.
Three firefighters were admitted to Jacobi Hospital with serious burns while the other four suffered minor injuries.
Five of them suffered burns to their hands and faces, officials added.
“The burns are considered serious, but not life-threatening,” said Esposito, who added that firefighters were “awake, alert and talking.”
Sheldon Temperman, a physician at Jacobi Hospital, said he is “concerned” but expects first responders to recover from their injuries.

Due to the scale of the explosion, questions will inevitably be asked, but authorities have not revealed whether they believe the detonation was a deliberate act or just some sort of freak accident. Although the fire was brought under control by 8:17 p.m. ET, investigations by a hazardous materials company, the Bureau of Fire Investigation, and the Bureau of Fire Prevention have all begun.
This is breaking news, and it certainly looks like a story for which more information will be available soon. RedState will keep you informed of any developments. At this early stage of the investigation it would be inappropriate to speculate, but I think it is reasonable to say that this was an unusually large explosion for a car fire.
Wednesday evening, members of the FDNY responded to several calls regarding a fire at 955 Westchester Avenue in the Bronx. Firefighters arrived to find several cars and piles of trash on fire. An explosion occurred on site, injuring seven firefighters.

The FDNY tweet continues:
“The explosion injured seven firefighters, five of them with burns to their hands and faces. Three of them are being admitted. The burns are considered serious, but not life-threatening. Our firefighters are awake, alert and talking, but they have severe burns, and we will pray for them. Thanks to the quick response of our emergency medical service, they were transported to Jacobi Hospital, where they were treated by emergency personnel from Jacobi Hospital’s Trauma and Burn Center,” said Department Chief John Esposito.
FDNY firefighters are working to determine the cause of the fire.
