Mayor Mamdani becomes an Upper East Sider as he leaves Astoria for Gracie Mansion

Monday was moving day for Mayor Mamdani as his wife, Rama Duwaji, left their Astoria apartment for Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s traditional residence on the Upper East Side.
“Rama and I feel fortunate to participate in a ritual that so many New Yorkers have experienced at different significant points in their lives: starting a new chapter by moving to a different part of the city that we call home,” Mamdani said at a press conference to discuss his move.
Boxes filled with kitchen supplies, a vacuum cleaner and Monstera plants sat outside the mansion, and movers stood near a truck as Mamdani spoke.

Mamdani said he intends to make the 11,000-square-foot mansion more “accessible to the people” than under previous mayors, although he did not provide details on how he plans to accomplish that.
The mayor lives in a rent-stabilized one-bedroom apartment in Astoria and pays his security deposit on his January rent, the last month of the lease.
Mamdani said he plans to install a few bidets on the mansion’s porcelain throne: “That’s an ambitious hope,” he joked.

The five-bedroom home features a large lawn with views of the East River and two-level wraparound porches.
Former Mayor Adams left the mansion, built in 1799, last month and has traveled extensively since then.
Earlier Monday, during an unrelated appearance, Adams said he left Mamdani a “good” note.
“I’ll get him,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani previously announced that he would make this decision.
“This decision depends on the safety of our family and the importance of devoting my full attention to implementing the affordability program that New Yorkers voted for,” Mamdani said in a statement.
