Mayorkas Once Admitted ‘Not All’ of Biden’s Afghans Vetted ‘In-Person’

In November 2021, as former President Joe Biden’s administration imported thousands of Afghan nationals into the United States each week, then-Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that “not all” Afghans were being vetted through “in-person interviews with refugees,” an admission that shocked members of Congress.
On Wednesday, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan, left two national guardsmen in critical condition after allegedly opening fire on them while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” law enforcement said.
Lakanwal arrived in the United States in 2021 as part of Biden’s Operation Allies Welcome, led at the time by Mayorkas, which ultimately resulted in tens of thousands of Afghans being resettled in American communities.
In November 2021, during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Mayorkas admitted to members of Congress that not all Afghan nationals brought to the United States following the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan had been screened in person.
“We don’t conduct in-person interviews with refugees 100 percent,” Mayorkas said.

Similarly, in October 2021, an email from a US diplomat at the time of the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan confirmed that orders to bring Afghan nationals to the US as quickly as possible without following standard refugee screening procedures came directly from Biden.
The email said:
Team,
President Biden telephoned Ambassador Wilson with the following directive regarding who should be allowed on evacuation flights:
“1. Anyone with valid identification should be allowed to board an airplane if they likely fall into the categories in which we will evacuate U.S. citizens and [legal permanent residents] as well as their immediate families, [local embassy staff] as well as their immediate families, those who are entitled to [Special Immigrant Visa]and Afghans in danger.
2. Families, including women and children, should be allowed to pass through and fill planes.
3. The total influx to the United States must exceed the number of seats available. Favor excess.
These guidelines provide discretion and clear guidelines for occupying seats and paying special attention to women and children when eating. I expect the volume of C17 flights to increase.
In September 2021, before a Senate hearing, then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken also admitted that it was unlikely that thousands of Afghan nationals would have been screened before boarding a plane to the United States.
“What percentage of [Afghans] were checked before boarding these planes? » Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) asked Blinken.
“Before they got on their planes to leave Kabul? Certainly not, most of them weren’t,” Blinken admitted.
