Mechele Elliott Safeguards Agency Information Systems at Johnson

As an IT security administrator at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Mechele Elliott protects information systems that support the health of astronauts and mission preparation.
The encouragement of a family friend has placed him on this path, leading to an enriching and somewhat unexpected career in human space.
“While I took care of my son during his treatment against cancer – to live in the hospital with him and to support his recovery at home – a friend of the family who worked in NASA took note,” said Elliott. “She quietly observed my strength, my organization and my devotion unshakable to my son. One day, she called and said, “Gather your curriculum vitae. »»
Elliott doubted that she was qualified for a position at NASA, although the friend was certain that she could learn and manage anything after taking care of her son. “His belief in me gave me the courage to take this first step – and that changed the course of my life.”
The approval of the friend helped her get the post. Elliott was nervous at the beginning, because she did not know much about NASA operations and had a limited previous experience. Over time and training, it has become more certain of the value it brought to the team.
“Thinking about the many personal challenges I encountered has strengthened my confidence in my ability to overcome obstacles while maintaining a positive perspective throughout my trip,” she said. “I am proud to have managed to adapt and become a productive member of my team.” In its role today, Elliott protects NASA information systems. It develops, implements and maintains security policies, procedures and systems in the direction of health and human performance, ensuring compliance with federal security standards and specific to NASA. His work includes the management of access control protocols and the response to security incidents.
One of his most difficult tasks was to assess, revitalize and implement four obsolete security plans thanks to collaboration with a diversified team. “We have managed to align security plans on established standards and collect praise from the management of NASA,” she said.
Outside of work, Elliott takes advantage of several hobbies that help him relax and maintain balance. She started painting at a young age and continues to find calm through her art. She is a passionate gardener, despite the summer heat of Houston, and feels accomplished by the beauty of her flowers and sharing local fruits and vegetables with her friends and family. It also acquired a reputation as an excellent baker. “I like to make cheese cakes for workplace celebrations and I discovered that many of my colleagues also enjoy my hobby!”
Elliott is deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve NASA for more than 25 years. In the future of the agency, it offers significant advice to the emerging members of the team. “Stay authentic towards yourself, continue your aspirations with determination and respect a commitment to excellence in all your efforts.”
