GALVESTON, Texas (FOX 44) – Rescue and recovery efforts were underway after a small Mexican Navy plane carrying a young medical patient and seven others crashed Monday near Galveston, killing at least five people and sparking a search in waters off the Texas coast, officials said.
The crash occurred Monday afternoon near the base of a roadway near Galveston, along the Texas coast, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) southeast of Houston.
According to Mexican officials, the plane was carrying out a mission on behalf of the Michou and Mau Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps seriously burned Mexican children.
Local media report that eight people were on board the plane at the time of the accident. Four of those on board were navy officers and four were civilians, including a child and two foundation members, the Mexican navy said in a statement to The Associated Press. It was not immediately clear which of them had died.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that five people were killed in the accident and that an investigation was underway into the cause of the accident.
