Melania Trump said Friday that eight Ukrainian children have been reunited with their families after ongoing discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In August, the first lady of the United States wrote a letter to Putin and asked her husband to hand deliver it when he met the Russian president in Alaska.

Putin’s invasion of Ukraine led Russia to remove Ukrainian children from their country so they could be raised as Russians.

The first lady, speaking to reporters at the White House, said Putin responded to her letter and after that they established an “open channel of communication” regarding the well-being of these children.

“We agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of everyone involved in this war,” she said.

The eight children were reunited with their families “in the last 24 hours,” she added.

The Associated Press documented the capture of Ukrainian children in 2022, after which the International Criminal Court said it issued an arrest warrant for Putin on war crimes charges, accusing him of personal responsibility for child abductions in Ukraine.

Donald Trump has expressed frustration in recent weeks over failing to end the war in Ukraine, which he promised as a candidate to end back in the day.
