Meta Vibes AI videos: One day in the ‘infinite slop machine’

In a sense, Meta AI vibrations – an endless parchment of videos generated by AI, submitted by creators and launched on the Meta AI application and the website on Friday – is the purest expression of what Meta CEG, Mark Zuckerberg, wanted to build when he designed Facebook first.

Animal videos generated by AI – there are many, often with cats huddled in comfortable contexts or dogs that cross fields – resemble clips from a dystopian alternative universe where MTV and the Hallmark chain have merged.

It is not an insult, by the way; I loved looking at musical clips since childhood, and it’s always my favorite way to get excited while working on my branch. But the best, often made by hungry directors who go to Hollywood, do what the best films do: they tell a convincing story. You can have all the cool images in the world, and your brain will quickly be bored if there is no story that connects them.

And this is the problem with vibrations: all these shorts are great candies for the eyes, none of them tells a story. By scrolling for a day, it was easy to see why social media users settled on the same description of the new Meta service: an “infinite slope machine”.

Is vibes the future of AI video?

To be fair, there is a lot of interesting AI art, things that tell a story and stay with you. Recently, we have highlighted nice things like this intelligent horror of the body based on food which has become viral on Reddit. The question of the quantity of AI breaks the copyright of other artists is always a hot button subject; A major case is to make its way through the system after a judge refused to throw it.

Again, to be fair, vibes also shows how far the AI ​​video has arrived in a few years. There has been few cases, at least in this organized creative diet, hands with too many fingers, torses with too many members and other characteristics that we associate with AI Sold. There was often something in a video that looked a little bad if you looked too closely – for example, why are these people on vacation looking at the sea, rather than the dinosaurs who have them in front of them a few meters from the walk?

But in general, the problem here is not the strange valley. The problem here is empty calories.

Young children can enjoy the bizarre aspect of eye candies for hours (vibrations may well be the new Einstein baby). But the more mature a brain, the less prosperous on a simple novelty. The brains are narration machines, which is why the infinite scrolling of Facebook was once convincing. We have shared stories and created our own community stories by arguing with each other about them. Vibes is the video version of AI Sols which undoubtedly made the social network of Zuckerberg less convincing than ever.

So yes, in a sense, Zuckerberg could not be closer to his MTV dream. And in another, the sense of narration that brings us back to discover what happened next, the infinite slope machine of Meta could not be further.
