Minnesota Fraud Scheme a ‘Top FBI Priority’
FBI Director Kash Patel acknowledged Minnesota’s ongoing fraud scandal involving day care centers, adding that it was part of a long investigation and would remain a top priority.
As Breitbart News reported, a video by YouTube journalist Nick Shirley went viral over the weekend after he confronted an employee at a purported Minnesota learning center that was receiving millions in aid despite showing no signs of operational activity.
In an article on X, Kash Patel said the FBI was investigating the situation.
“The FBI is aware of recent social media reports in Minnesota. However, even before the public conversation intensified online, the FBI had sent investigative personnel and resources to Minnesota to dismantle large-scale fraudulent schemes exploiting federal programs. Fraud that steals from taxpayers and vulnerable children will remain a top priority for the FBI in Minnesota and across the country,” he said.
Patel then noted that the FBI “dismantled a $250 million fraudulent scheme that stole federal food aid intended for vulnerable children during COVID.”
“The investigation revealed phony sellers, shell companies and large-scale money laundering linked to the Feeding Our Future network,” he continued. “The case resulted in 78 indictments and 57 convictions. The defendants included Abdiwahab Ahmed Mohamud, Ahmed Ali, Hussein Farah, Abdullahe Nur Jesow, Asha Farhan Hassan, Ousman Camara and Abdirashid Bixi Dool, each accused of roles ranging from wire fraud to money laundering and conspiracy.”
Patel concluded that these plans are “just the tip of a very big iceberg.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson also revealed earlier this month that half of the $18 billion in federal welfare funds, which have supported 14 Minnesota-run programs since 2018, were lost to fraud.
“Minnesota has become a magnet for fraud, so much so that we have developed a fraudulent tourism industry – people coming to our state solely to exploit and defraud its programs,” Thompson said. “This is a deeply disturbing reality that all Minnesotans should understand.”
