Having seen my seriously ill husband being treated after a near-death experience, I couldn’t agree more with Anne Perkins (I knew all about the challenges and flaws of the NHS. But then, as a patient, I saw the love and the magic, on December 29). When we don’t need the NHS, it works quietly in the background. When we do, the care, love and support is beyond words and priceless. How lucky we are.

I disagree with the title of your article (2025 was the year we tired of fame for fame’s sake, December 30). On December 22, we broadcast famous versions of Antiques Road Trip, The Chase, Escape to the Country, Mastermind and Masterchef on television, while newspaper columns were previously devoted to celebrity traitors.

Banning Médecins Sans Frontières from working in Gaza would surely be beyond ironic (Israel to ban dozens of humanitarian agencies from Gaza as 10 countries warn of suffering, December 30).

Regarding units of measurement (Is it Twixmas or Twixtmas? And other style guide conundrums we faced this year in the December 29 Guardian), I noticed in a recent Guardian article that the size of the Mexican island of Espíritu Santo was compared to that of Manhattan. What is it like on football fields and/or in Wales?

Twixtmas or Twixmas? Why use one or the other?
