Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) would like to push California Gov. Gavin Newsom as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2028.

Sources close to Pelosi told Axios that the Democratic Party leader pushed Newsom for 2028 behind closed doors, given that the two worked together, dating back to his time as mayor of San Francisco.

“Pelosi has one of the most powerful donor networks in Democratic politics. She was a key validator of Newsom as he emerged onto the national scene and became one of President Trump’s most visible foes,” Axios noted.

A former aide to the House speaker even said that Pelosi was a bit of a “Gavin fan-girl,” noting that she “doesn’t have crushes on a lot of people.”

“I will say this: She’s almost never wrong. When she says she sees something, it’s a real thing,” the aide added.

Aides also said Pelosi had privately expressed admiration for how Newsom had navigated the era of President Donald Trump “with a combination of defiance and charm.”

Pelosi also previously told the New Yorkers that Newsom has been a “masterful” leader in the Trump era.

“In terms of leadership, vision and values, knowledge of the issues, strategic thinking about how to get things done… he is masterful,” she said.

Pelosi also said Vogue that she “saw him grow politically” over the years.

“I’ve also seen him have this beautiful family, and for all of us who love him, watching him evolve has been wonderful to see,” Pelosi said.

A spokesperson for Pelosi declined to comment on the situation, but Newsom spokeswoman Lindsey Cobia told Axios that the governor has always celebrated Pelosi’s public service.

“Governor Newsom believes that Speaker Pelosi is the epitome of selfless public service and will go down in history as one of the most important leaders of our time,” Cobia said.
