France captain Mbappé ruled out of Iceland game with injury
Kylian Mbappé will miss France’s World Cup qualifier in Iceland on Monday due to an ankle injury.
The captain was injured in Friday’s 3-0 home win over Azerbaijan and has already returned home, the French Football Federation announced on Saturday.
It is not yet clear how long the 26-year-old Real Madrid striker will be out. Los Blancos are set to face Getafe in the Spanish league next Sunday.
French coach Didier Deschamps will not call up a replacement for the trip to Reykjavik.
Mbappé had given France the lead against Azerbaijan with an impressive solo effort shortly before half-time. However, he had to be substituted in the closing stages after suffering a knock to his ankle.
Qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico is within France’s reach. Les Bleus lead Group D with nine points, comfortably ahead of second-placed Ukraine, who have four points after a thrilling 5-3 win in Iceland.
Only group winners qualify directly for the World Cup.
