A last -minute thrust to record voters from the 6th district of the Georgia Congress before the special elections of June 20 led to nearly 8,000 new voters on Tuesday in the district, the Atlanta Journal-Constution Reports. This is a large number to swing a narrow election, and the polls have so far shown the race in the margin of error. It is also an encouraging sign for the Democrat Jon Ossoff, the insurgent candidate who exceeded the first voting round in the firmly republican district and hopes that the new voters will be able to put it in mind during the runoff of June 20.

The election between Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel has been widely described as a test of democratic resistance to President Donald Trump. In the conservative district, Ossoff tries to take off the republican voters disenchanted by Trump, especially white women. But to win, Ossoff also needs strong support from the democratic base and new voters. Thus, when a federal judge reopened the recording of voters in the district until May 21, groups that target young, poor and minority voters rushed into the district to record eligible voters. The 7,942 new voters include new registrants and people who moved into the district after the primary and transferred their registration.

The district has more than 521,000 registered voters, it is therefore not clear if 7,942 others – or approximately 1.5% of this total – will make a difference. Ossoff fell from 3,700 votes unless you win A pure and simple majority in primary on April 18. If runoff remains a throw, these new voters could determine the winner.
