New Emoji Proposed: Is the Eggplant’s Reign Over?

Emoji Fans, rejoice! In October, the Unicode Consortium proposed nine new emoji as part of the upcoming Unicode 18.0. One of the proposed emoji is a pickle, which I think could replace the eggplant as the go-to male anatomy emoji.
Am I childish or prophetic? We’ll have to wait a bit to find out. The Unicode Consortium still needs to approve these proposed emoji, and the organization typically approves emoji in September.
These are mockups of the featured emoji that you might soon see on your device.
Here are the nine new emoji you might see on your device in 2027.
- A smiling face with narrowed eyes.
- A thumbs up gesture to the left.
- A thumbs up gesture to the right.
- A monarch butterfly.
- A pickle.
- A lighthouse.
- A meteor.
- An eraser.
- A net with a handle.
Once an emoji is approved, it’s up to companies like Apple and Samsung to design and implement their own versions of those emoji. Emoji are then typically added to Apple and Android devices via software updates within a year of approval. So if these emoji are approved, you probably won’t see them until 2027. I’m still waiting for the orca and sasquatch emoji appear on my phone after being approved in 2024.
It is also possible that one or more of these emoji are not approved by the Unicode Consortium. In 2025, the apple core emoji was removed from consideration before it could be approved.
