Paranormal activity
I was lucky enough (and old enough) to see a preview of the film that started the found footage phenomenon in theaters in 1999:The Blair Witch Project. No one knew what they were looking at, and the marketing was so good that people believed it was real, which made it terrifying. However, eight years later, Paranormal activity would spark a true renaissance of the found footage genre, but in a much more modest and seemingly safer setting than a haunted forest – an ordinary, clean, bright suburban house. If horrors can take you there, they can take you anywhere.
Made by filmmaker Oren Peli for just $15,000, Paranormal activity is the simple story of a young San Diego couple, Micah and Katie, who move into a new house when strange things start happening at night. Micha sets up a camera to try to capture everything that’s tormenting Katie – doors slamming, scary things moving under the sheets – but things get much worse. Paranormal activity scared audiences (even Steven Spielberg was reportedly terrified) and sparked a seven-film franchise, with an eighth reportedly on the way. All seven Paranormal Activity films are currently streaming on Paramount+, so grab some popcorn and a big pillow to hide behind and get going.

Molly’s Game
A famous poker ring and the woman behind it
Molly Bloom was once an elite mogul skier on the U.S. women’s ski team before a devastating wipeout forced her to retire from the sport. So what’s an enterprising girl to do, other than build the world’s largest and most exclusive underground poker empire for the most prestigious celebrities? Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, Molly’s Game is an Oscar-nominated film based on Bloom’s own memoir, starring Jessica Chastain, who gives a powerful performance alongside Idris Elba, Jeremy Strong and Kevin Costner.

Molly’s Game has an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rushing
The epic rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda is revealed
Before Apple TV F1 The Movie has arrived, writer Peter Morgan and 2013 BAFTA-winning director Ron Howard’s dramatic biopic about one of the greatest Formula 1 rivalries of all time has been considered the best F1 film of all time (some argue it still is). It doesn’t matter, because no matter how you cut it, Rushing is a must-have for racing fans. It tells the real-life story of the 1976 Formula One season and the intense battle for the championship between McLaren’s British playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Ferrari’s Austrian world champion Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl).
When their rivalry led to Lauda’s tragic accident at the Nürburgring in Germany, where he suffered third-degree burns to his face and head, as well as his lungs, a guilt-ridden Hunt struggled to continue the season and pursue his championship dream amid his own personal problems. In a true display of his determination, Lauda made a miraculous return to the track later in the season. Rushing is an exploration of the very different lives of Hunt, who loved the glitz, glamour, women and lifestyle of racing drivers, and the more conservative family man, Lauda. Olivia Wilde stars as Hunt’s glamorous wife, Suzy Miller, in this 89% fresh Formula 1 film.
