New Plan in UK Would Slap Illegal Immigrants With 10-Year Benefits Blackout – RedState

In most cases we shouldn’t look to the UK or the rest of Europe as an example for how to do anything. In the case of the UK, it’s rather sad; it is a nation that was once the original America, where our language and much of our culture originated. But that was a long time ago now.
Sometimes, however, Britons find an acorn, and a new proposal from Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood plans to impose a 10-year moratorium on welfare for illegal immigrants who flocked to Britain during Boris Johnson’s migrant “Boriswave”.
Migrants who arrived in Britain as part of the “Boriswave” face a ban on claiming benefits for 10 years.
Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, is expected to announce plans to force up to 1.6 million migrants who arrived under Boris Johnson’s immigration regime to wait a decade before being entitled to indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
There are fears that migrants could add hundreds of millions of pounds to Britain’s growing welfare bill as more than 800,000 of them work in low-paid jobs, meaning they and their families could be entitled to welfare support.
Data released under freedom of information laws shows that 55% (879,000) of the 1.6 million migrants arriving between 2021 and 2024 earned less than the UK median salary of £29,640 a year.
“Indefinite leave to remain” effectively legitimizes illegal aliens in Britain, allowing them to qualify for public benefits – welfare, in simple terms. Reform Party leader Nigel Farage, among others, is pushing for deeper reforms.
Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, has threatened to strip ILR status from hundreds of thousands of non-EU citizens who already have it and force them to reapply for visas under stricter criteria, including higher pay and better English.
The Conservatives had proposed a similar policy, but have gone back and instead proposed that migrants would only be entitled to ILR after 10 years, provided they are “net contributors” to the UK economy by earning more from their work than they cost the state.

Now let’s think about this in terms of our own immigration policy.
First, legal immigration. Our immigration policy should limit legal immigration to those who can come here and immediately contribute to America’s prosperity: people who come here to work, to start businesses, to be part of the American economy, not a drain on it. To ensure that this happens, something similar to the proposal above should work: Any legal immigrant arriving in the United States will face a ten-year moratorium on all government benefits except emergency medication and, in extremis, food benefits to prevent a full-blown famine. We are not savages, after all.
Second, illegal immigration. It’s been a hot bone of contention in recent months — let’s face it, ever since President Trump took office — but people living in the country illegally should never receive government benefits at any level, no matter how long they’ve been in the country. Ah yes, emergency medicine, in the event of an accident or serious illness; once again, we are not savages. But this must be followed as soon as they are out of danger, with repatriation to their country of origin.
It is a nation, not a refuge. There is no moral or practical reason to extend government benefits to people who entered the country illegally and remain there illegally. Legal immigration should – must – be tailored to attract only people with something to contribute.
Britain’s Home Secretary has taken a step towards some semblance of common sense in immigration policy, but he still has a very long way to go. Luckily, we’re closer to sanity – but we could also do a little work here.
Editor’s note: We voted for mass deportations, not mass amnesty. Help us continue to fight against those who try to go against the will of the American people.
