New Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s locations now open in CT. Here’s where

Two major grocery stores opened in neighboring Connecticut towns this week, giving New Haven County residents some new shopping options.

On Feb. 5, Whole Foods opened a location in Cheshire, while a Trader Joe’s opened the same day in Hamden. Both stores hosted grand opening festivities.

Whole Foods, known for its organic products and expansive hot food bar, has six other locations in Connecticut. Trader Joe’s, which sells eclectic private-label food items, has 10 other stores in the state.

The newest Whole Foods grocery store (and seventh in Connecticut) is located in Cheshire, at 1985 Highland Ave. It began welcoming customers on Thursday, Feb. 5.

The 42,000-square-foot store sells more than 1,000 different products from New England, including herbs from Gilbertie’s Organics and strawberries from Pell Family Farm, the company said in a statement.

In honor of the opening, Whole Foods said it will provide an electric refrigerated van and a food donation to Haven’s Harvest, a local non-profit committed to reducing food waste. The company said it will also donate to the Cheshire Community Food Pantry and Connecticut Foodshare.

The Cheshire store is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Where is the new Trader Joe’s located in Hamden?

The newest Trader Joe’s store is in the Hamden Shopping Plaza at 46 Skiff St. – next to the Marketplace. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Thursday, Feb. 5, to welcome in the first customers.

The 9,256-square-foot store is the first Trader Joe’s in the area and the 11th in Connecticut, a company spokesperson said in a statement. More than 40 employees were hired to work at the new location.

The new location will participate in the Trader Joe’s Neighborhood Shares Program, donating all unsold edible products to local non-profits, the spokesperson said.

The Hamden store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
