Newcastle should pounce for Trafford this summer after Ramsdale’s loan expires

Newcastle United looked set to complete a deal to bring James Trafford to St James Park this summer, but he opted to move to Manchester City instead.
Newcastle then signed Aaron Ramsdale on loan to compete with the declining Nick Pope for the starting place.

Unfortunately, it’s a lose-lose situation for all parties involved. The Geordies didn’t get their man. He has no playing time.
Meanwhile, Ramsdale’s time at Newcastle has not been inspiring. Since usurping Pope’s place, he hasn’t done enough to encourage the club to buy him permanently.
His goals avoided statistic in the Premier League is an abysmal -2.39. after seven appearances.
He has not yet kept a clean sheet. He’s not the authoritative presence the Toons need between the sticks.
For comparison, Trafford have kept a clean sheet and recorded 1.89 goals avoided in three appearances.

The 23-year-old recently impressed in the FA Cup against Salford, keeping another clean sheet, before expressing his frustration at being second choice goalkeeper.
He thought he would be first choice at the start of the season, but City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving him out.
For Newcastle, the situation now looks like a market opportunity has swung back in their favor.
Trafford are at a stage in their career where development is dependent on regular exposure to the Premier League, something City cannot currently guarantee.
This creates a rare chance for Newcastle to act decisively and sign a goalkeeper shaped for modern, progressive football.

At Trafford, Pep Guardiola said (via the BBC): “He’s so reliable. Fantastic goalkeeper.”
Trafford’s distribution, composure under pressure and ability to play a high defensive line fits perfectly with the direction Newcastle want to move in.
More importantly, the club needs succession planning due to the uncertainty surrounding Pope. Waiting any longer risks leading to the intervention of another rival.
If Newcastle are serious about building a team capable of leading sustained European efforts, this is the summer to land their long-term number 1.
