Maine High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – Oct. 14

The Maine high school football season has a few weeks left in the regular season before the playoffs kick off.
Top-ranked Thornton Academy remains the No. 1 team in the state even after losing to Bedford, ranked No. 4 in New Hampshire. Bonny Eagle remains No. 2 after beating Portland, 34-7. Who else should be in Pine Tree State’s Top 25 rankings this week?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game results, strength of schedule and margin of victory.
Here are the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of October 14.
1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans
The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (5-1) finished 10-3 last season, with two of their three losses coming against the Portland Bulldogs. The Trojans made easy work of the Bulldogs last week in a 36-0 game, a rematch of last year’s Class A state championship game, which the Trojans are on a mission to avenge this fall.
The Trojans opened the season with a dominant 44-0 victory over Scarboroughbut lost their first game in a 26-14 loss to Bedford (New Hampshire). Thornton Academy is back in action Saturday against Sanford before next week’s major match against Bonny Eagle (see below).
2. Bonny Eagle Scottish
There are no more questions on this one: Bonny Eagle (6-0) is back after finishing under .500 last fall. This has been supported by four consecutive victories against Windham, Noble, Oxford Hills Comprehensive and especially Portland in recent weeks. In 2024, the Scots recorded more wins than defeats, with their campaign ending in defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half-dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and they’re off to a good start in trying to end that streak.
Strategist Colin Moran played well behind center, throwing for 541 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Bonny Eagle will face Massabesic this week before a 1-2 showdown with top-ranked Thornton Academy on October 24.
3. Portland Bulldogs
The Portland Bulldogs (4-2) have lost two straight games following last week’s 34-7 loss to No. 2 Bonny Eagle. Portland ended up falling to Thornton Academy, the same team they beat for the Class A title last fall, in a 36-0 loss a few weeks ago.
The Bulldogs feature on offense, arguably one of the best players in the state of Maine. Cordell Jones (503 rushing yards), who accounted for 1,216 total yards and 18 touchdowns offensively last fall and has moved more toward the Bulldogs’ quarterback position.
Portland looks to bounce back against winless Lewiston this week.
4. Noble Knights
Noble (4-1) lost its first game of the season when it fell 18-0 to No. 3 Bonny Eagle last week. The Knights were on a three-game winning streak to start the season, before losing their first game of 2025 to Bonny Eagle. Noble bounced back at home by beating Marshwood, 35-27. The Knights have won two in a row by narrowly defeating Sanford, 14-7, and hope to make it three in a row when they take on Keene at home this Friday night.
5. Rams Cony
The Rams work their way into the Top 5 rankings this week after a 55-0 victory over Skowhegan Area (3-3) last Friday.
One of the highest scoring offenses in the state of Maine was Cony’s, averaging 47 at 0.8 points per game. Cony will have the chance to finish the regular season with an undefeated season when they take on Lawrence and Gardiner Area, respectively.
The Rams are considered a viable Class B state championship contender this fall.
