Free museum admission for military personnel, their families

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive, is offering free admission for military personnel and their families from May 16 (Armed Forces Day) until Sept. 7 (Labor Day).

The Blue Star Museum program provides free admission to U.S. military personnel and their families during the summer. Learn more and find the list of participating museums at arts.gov/BlueStarMuseums.

Southeast Stride 5K Walk and Run

CANTON ‒ Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio will host the Southeast Stride 5K Run/Walk/Stroll on May 30 at the Southeast Community Playground, 401 14th St. SE.

Registration starts at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9 a.m. Registration is $25 for adults and $20 for students. The price increases after 11:59 p.m. May 29. There is no charge for children. Register in advance at www.habi.news/stride.

The following streets will close from 8 to 11 a.m. May 30 for the event. There will also be street parking restrictions:

  • 13th Street SE from Leavell Court to Allen Avenue

  • 14th Street SE from Housel Avenue to Purney Court

Museum sets summer camps

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive, will host three summer camps this year: Foodie Camp, Summer Science Camp and Movie Camp. Space is limited for each camp. Reservations are online only at www.McKinleyMuseum.org.

  • Foodie Camp is 9 a.m. to noon July 9 and 10 for grades 4 through 6. Children will recreate fair foods on July 9 and participate in a bake off on July 10. Cost per day is $30/$28 for museum members.

  • Summer Science Camp is 9 a.m. to noon July 14 through 17 for grades 1 through 5. Cost per day is $30/$28 for museum members.

  • Movie Camp is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 27 through 31 for grades 6 through 8. Cost is $165/$155 for museum members. Presented in partnership with Nightwine Productions, campers will spend a week filming during the camp experience, often in hidden, behind-the-scenes spots in the museum. After Movie Camp ends, Nightwine Productions will work on editing and special effects throughout the fall. The movie’s world premiere takes place in December. Family and friends are invited to the premiere.

ODNR seeks applicants for Conservation Teen Advisory Council

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is seeking high school student leaders for the next class of the Conservation Teen Advisory Council. Each month, members will go on a field trip featuring a different ODNR property and will learn from industry professionals about Ohio’s natural resources, as well as the career pathways. The deadline to apply is June 5. Students must be entering grades 9 to 12 for the 2026-27 school year to apply.The teen council members can attend Wildlife and Forestry Advisory Council meetings, offering insight into how state agencies are guided and advised. Students also complete a “Take Action” project focused on conservation. CANTON – The McKinley Museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW, will explore “The History & Culture of Sneakers: From the 1830s to Air Jordans” at its Soup at Six event at 6 p.m. June 4 with membership coordinator Zander Everman.

Walk-in mental health assessment clinic launches

JACKSON TWP. ‒ Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health has launched a pilot Walk-In Mental Health Assessment Clinic, made possible through a $22,500 grant from the Austin-Bailey Wellness Foundation.

The clinic offers walk-in availability on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Belden Village office, 4641 Fulton Drive NW. Upon arrival, families meet with a clinical intake specialist before completing a comprehensive assessment with a licensed diagnostic professional. When appropriate, a diagnosis is provided, and families work with professionals to identify next steps and recommended services for their child’s needs.

Ohio’s Hospice to hold golf fundraiser

JACKSON TWP. – Ohio’s Hospice will hold its second annual Hope Swings Golf Classic on June 22 at Brookside Country Club,1800 Canton Ave. NW, to support its continued mission of serving patients, families and the community.

The event begins with registration at 9 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $1,100 per foursome and includes 18 holes with a cart, breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks.

MASSILLON – “Women in Pants: Bicycles, Bloomers, and the New Woman of the 1890s” will be the topic of the May 26 Brown Bag Lunch at the Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E. The free program will begin at 12:10 p.m. and conclude about 12:50 p.m. All are welcome. No reservations are required.

Library launches summer reading program

MINERVA ‒ Minerva Public Library, 677 Lynnwood Drive, will celebrate the launch of its Summer Reading Program with a free Summer Kickoff Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. May 29. The event marks the official start of sign-ups for the library’s “Unearth a Story” Summer Reading Challenge, which runs through July 31, 2026, and features programs, activities, reading challenges, and prizes.

Participants read for at least 15 minutes each day, color in their reading log weekly, and turn in their completed log to the library’s Youth Desk by July 24. Readers who complete the challenge earn an invitation to the End-of-the-Read Pool Party at Minerva Municipal Swimming Pool on July 29, plus an extra ticket for the Summer Reading Raffle, where readers can win gift cards and other prizes.

Wilderness Center offers Nature Camps

SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, will host weekly Nature Camp sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in June and July for children ages 5 through 12.

The Nature Camp features four themed weeks, each offered in two sessions:

  • Expedition Wildlife: Session 1 is June 8-12; Session 2 is July 6-10.

  • H2Whoa!: Session 1 is June 15-19; Session 2 is July 13-17.

  • Naturally Artistic: Session 1 is June 22-26; Session 2 is July 20-24.

  • Nature Skills: Session 1 is June 29-July 3; Session 2 is July 27-31.

Register for forestry camp

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will host Camp Canopy, a forestry camp, from June 7-12 at FFA Camp Muskingum on Leesville Lake in Carroll County. Students who have completed eighth grade through high school seniors graduating in 2026 are invited. The deadline to register is May 29.

Camp Canopy’s core classes cover tree identification, forest ecology, silviculture, wildlife management, and forest products. Campers get hands-on learning and spend time with professionals in the field.

Classes are designed to showcase different facets of forestry, land management, and conservation, giving campers a broader look at the many paths and specialties within the field.
