‘Always great to get a double hundred’: Devdutt Padikkal after 232 masterclass in Ranji Trophy semifinal

Lucknow: On a surface that promised runs and demanded discipline, Karnataka skipper Devdutt Padikkal delivered both to a large extent. The stylish left-hander, who has only featured in two Tests so far – both in 2024 – reminded everyone why he continues to be seen as a long-term No.3 option for India.
Despite consistent domestic returns, Padikkal found himself on the fringes of the national team. But with Indian batting struggling in home Tests in recent months, his monumental 232 in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Uttarakhand could not have been better timed. This was his highest first-class score, eclipsing his previous record of 193 against Punjab in 2024.
Batting with characteristic patience, Padikkal first exhausted the attack before deploying his blows with authority. “It’s always great to get a double hundred. You don’t get these opportunities often, so I’m happy I was able to do it,” he said.
The knock also helped bury the ghost of his 193 against Punjab. “I was disappointed that day. When I came close to the double hundred here, I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything again,” he said.
Of three left-handers dominating the semi-finals, Padikkal ruled out the angle. “I don’t think it’s about being left-handed. Maybe facing two left-arm spinners helped, but it’s mostly a coincidence. Everyone batted well. KL and Karun also scored runs.”
Appointed captain of Karnataka midway through the season, Padikkal took on the added responsibility without letting it weigh down his batting. “Of course it’s different, but I try not to let captaincy affect the way I play. Having experienced players like KL Rahul and Karun Nair has been a blessing.”
With three days to go, discussions on the declaration were suspended. “When you get good batting conditions after playing on tough Ranji wickets, you have to stay hungry and cash in. You have to keep remembering that these opportunities don’t come that often. We want to put a big total on the board,” he said.
When asked about the pitch, he said: “It’s a great wicket. Lucknow has generally produced good wickets for multi-day cricket. We knew it would be a good wicket to play five-day cricket. We are happy that so far it has played out well. We hope to continue batting well and put a big total on the board.”
