Hours before President Donald Trump delivered a highly anticipated speech on the economy and affordability, a new national poll indicated the president’s approval was rising, thanks in part to growing support from Republicans.

Trump’s approval rating in a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted Dec. 3-8 and released Tuesday stood at 41 percent, with 57 percent disapproving.

This is an improvement from mid-November, when the president was between 38 and 60 percent approval/disapproval in the previous Reuters/Ipsos national poll.

Trump’s focus on lowering prices helped him and Republicans score stunning victories last year, when the Republican Party won back the White House and Senate and successfully defended its majority in the House.

But Democrats are invigorated after their decisive victories last month in the 2025 elections and after their overperformance last week in a special congressional election in Tennessee, as they hammered Republicans on affordability as prices remained high this year.

The Labor Department’s most recent report, from September, indicated that inflation rose 3% from a year earlier, up slightly from 2.9% in August.

Although fighting rising prices remains one of Trump’s weakest polling issues, the new poll shows the president’s approval of tackling the cost of living rose from 26% last month to 31% today. This increase was fueled by a 10-point jump among Republicans.

While Trump has called Democrats’ focus on affordability a “hoax,” he has also become more engaged in the fight against rising prices in recent weeks, as the president has reduced some of his tariffs and pledged to lower high food prices.

Three-quarters of those surveyed have a negative view of the economy. And by a margin of nearly two to one, voters believe Trump was more responsible for the current economy than former President Joe Biden.
