We have already heard the President of the United States disparage and deseane Chicago before.

What we have not seen so far is that Donald Trump appears before a gathering of the military commanders of the nation – summoned to Quantico, in Virginia, of the whole world for what turned out to be a bizarre gathering for television – and describing our colleagues citizens as “the enemy inside” and adding our city to its list of “training reasons” for the troops foreign.

Trump speaks illicably as a question of habit. It is sad to say that many Americans, whether supporters or adversaries, are at this stage of the taunts of the court of school and the caricatured bravado of the commander of our nation -in -chief.

But the context in this case makes all the difference. He made these words – like Chicago supported a foray in federal troops on the objections of Governor JB Pritzker – disturbing.

“Last month, I signed a decree to provide training for a rapid reaction force that can help stifle civilian problems,” Trump said at the top brass, who sat down quietly during the time and 15 minutes from the Division, the Division and very partisan of the President. “It will be a great thing for the people of this room because it is the enemy of the interior. We must manage it before it becomes uncontrollable. ”

“We have to use some of these cities as training ground for some of our soldiers,” said Trump. “National, but military guard. Because we are going to Chicago very soon. ”

There are a lot of bad things – and honestly non -American – on the framing by Trump of Chicago and the problems of this city. Let’s start with it.

People who gather and peacefully protest the actions of this administration do not constitute “civil disturbances” which must be “repressed”.

Pritzker warned the public on Monday that the Trump administration intended to send 100 soldiers in response to demonstrations outside the BroadView federal installations which were used to hold alleged undocumented immigrants as federal agents of the border patrol and others have raised in the region in recent weeks. It was not clear that the governor said – and he probably does not know much more than we at this stage – if the troops would be used exclusively in BroadView to allow agents to do their work without interference or if they would patrol other parts of the city.

We hope for a limited and well -defined mission if they come.

What we can say: Trump’s bellicose words in front of an audience of generals who must follow his orders do not comfort us. Chicagoans have the right constitutional to protest in Pacific to protest against their government and should feel safe when they do so without worrying about the use of force by a member of the National Guard or any other member of the armed forces who need “training”.

Which brings us to the second major problem with Trump’s remarks. Our city – or any other American city – should not be a “training ground” for the troops which have finally enlisted to fight against foreign opponents. President Trump, the Chicagoans are your American compatriots.
