At the US Open, tennis stars shine under dark sky-friendly outdoor lights

When the court lights sparkle at the US Open, the tennis stars shine under lighting designed to cut light pollution. The luminaires of the courts USTA in Flushing Meadows shine on the players without spitting it in the surrounding sky. The stadium complex is the only professional sporting place certified by Darksky International, a group trying to preserve the night sky around the world. Through North America and Canada, local schools and parks have also exchanged their lights on baseball fields, tracks and other leisure fields to preserve their vision of stars and protect local fauna.
