But no one in Washington has explained with any clarity the reasons for war with Iran, leaving even members of Trump’s cabinet confused about the desired message. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, for example, had to eat his own words Tuesday night after the president disagreed with his description of the war. Rubio initially suggested to reporters Monday that Israel had forced Trump’s hand, forcing the United States to strike first because of reports that Iran would retaliate forcefully against U.S. interests if Israel carried out its attack plans.
The next day, Rubio stuttered in front of the cameras saying he never said anything like that. Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the UN, said later in the day that Rubio’s direct comments had been “taken out of context.”
Six American soldiers have been killed in the conflict so far, as have more than 20 Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Eighteen American soldiers were also seriously injured. More than 1,000 Iranian civilians were killed, including 176 children, including dozens at a girls’ school in the south of the country.
