The Department of Homeland Security has opened up a new immigration detention facility inside the Louisiana State Penitentiary, known as Angola.

The detention centre is designed to hold more than 400 undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes, including murder and rape.

As of Tuesday, 51 detainees had already arrived, according to US Immigrations Customs and Enforcement.

The BBC’s Nick Beake explains Angola’s notorious reputation, and how it fits into US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
