I have the impression that there are too many ways to send a message to people – or so that people send me a message. Imessage, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp Instagram DMS, Signal, Telegram – The list is long, and with it, the list of applications I have to keep a trace to stay in touch with friends and family. Now, apparently, it’s time to add Spotify to this list.

It’s true: Spotify gets DMS. The company announced the functionality – Dubbed, appropriately, “messages” – in a blog article on Tuesday. Spotify “messages” work like any other messaging platform in the application. Once available on your account, you will find the tab by pressing your profile at the top left, or keeping right on the home screen. You will see all the threads of existing messages, with non -read conversations sorted at the top, as well as the option to start a new message at the bottom.

Although you can send an SMS to your friends you want, including emojis, the main objective of Spotify DMS is to share the Spotify content, such as music, audio books and podcasts. As you can expect, sharing in the application is simple: you press the Share on content button you listen to, then choose the name of a friend for the DM. As usual, Spotify allows you to adjust the color or style of the art of the album before sending, if you want to have fun with it.

Functionality is not an exclusive premium either: all Spotify users aged at least 16 years old can access the DMS, which is a neat advantage. This seems to be the type of option that many companies would only offer subscribers, although I suppose that this defeated the objective of facilitating the sharing of Spotify content with Spotify users, many of whom do not pay.

What do you think so far?

As for confidentiality and security, the initial report is mixed: Spotify says that it uses “standard encryption in the transit and rest industry”, so that your messages are encrypted both when stored on your device and when sending other Spotify users. That said, the company uses “proactive detection technology” to scan messages for “illegal and harmful content”. Everything that is reported, both by users only through this system, will be examined by the moderators. As noble as it may be, for me, it is not the platform for those concerned with privacy who wish to ensure that their messages cannot be followed by technological companies.
