Merced College introducing California LAW Pathway starting in the spring

Merced College ensures that there is a clear path to pursuing a legal career.
Dean Joe Serena says the college is introducing the California LAW Pathway starting in the spring.
It is a statewide program designed to diversify the legal field and expand opportunities for aspiring lawyers from underrepresented communities.
“Having this pathway is nice because students not only have a location and points of contact with an assistant advisor, faculty champions, myself and others, but they will have this whole support system,” Serena said.
Students will receive additional guidance, advice, mentoring and experiences that will help them succeed.
“They’ll be able to attend lectures and trainings that will provide them with a lot more knowledge. They’ll also go on field trips to some of these law schools, so it really brings everything together for the students,” Serena said.
Students still have to pay for their regular classes, but everything else is free.
There are no specific major requirements or prerequisites.
Students in the pathway will receive a certificate of completion and priority admission to participating law schools.
Serena says they have the support of professors with law degrees, the president of the university’s board of trustees and the Merced County district attorney, so they’re excited to see where this goes.
“Having their support is great. We’re going to lean on their support, experience and mentorship to really help our students,” Serena said.
The first cohort will be launched next semester.
