It can be a full-time job to keep up with all the latest releases and trending movies and shows that bombard us daily. But sometimes you just want to watch a sure thing, something comforting and familiar.

Netflix has no shortage of classic films to choose from. Whether your definition of “classic” means golden age gems or more cultural classics like films that had a significant impact on the zeitgeist or defined the genre, I’ve selected a few that I think fit the bill.

Support Me (1986)

The recent tragic passing of Rob Reiner has me nostalgic for this coming-of-age drama that defines the “kids on adventure” genre. Stay close to me is a rite of passage classic starring an ensemble cast of some Hollywood notables when they were still kids. Set in Oregon in 1959, it follows four best friends – Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern Tessio (Jerry O’Connell) – who set out along the railroad tracks in search of the body of a missing boy, in the hopes that his discovery will make them local heroes.

It’s the journey that makes this film so compelling and emotionally impactful – it’s full of obstacles, from junkyard guard dogs and blood-sucking leeches in the swamp to brushes with death from high-speed trains and clashes with a gang of violent older kids led by Ace Merril (Kiefer Sutherland). Along the way, the boys smoke cigarettes, tell dirty jokes around the campfire, and talk honestly about their fears for their future.

Adapted from the short story by Stephen King The bodyThe Reiner-directed adventure comedy helped create the template for the modern coming-of-age film, spawning a long list of films, The sandy ground And The Powerful or even have an obvious influence on current prices as Strange things.

However, you might want to watch it soon, because Stay close to me is set to leave Netflix on February 28.

Dr. No (1962)

For the first time ever, all 25 of Ian Fleming’s (yes, I think even Daniel Craig’s are classics now) classic James Bond films are available to stream on Netflix. 1962s Dr. NoHowever, this is where it all began, providing the blueprint for the Bond formula (a megalomaniac villain, a secret island lair, high-tech spy gadgets and beautiful women) and the stencil for modern spy cinema.

Sean Connery, who was not yet a household name, would set the tone for the 007s to come, with his debonair style and his iconic line: “Bond, James Bond.” In Dr. NoBond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the murder of a fellow secret agent. Bond, of course, uncovers a sinister plot by the villainous Dr. Julius No (Joesph Wiseman), a Soviet-linked agent with mechanical hands who uses radio signals to disrupt American missile tests from his island fortress.

Dr. No features a long list of moments that would establish the basis for Bond films to come, including the introduction of the first Bond girl, Honey Rider (Ursula Andress), who classically emerges from the ocean in her iconic white bikini, and Connery’s inimitable confidence at the casino card table. Bernard Lee’s M and Lois Maxwell’s Ms. Moneypenny also help secure the show’s HQ support. It’s a classic through and through.

Castaway (2000)

Perhaps you found yourself inexplicably shouting “Wilson!” » volleyball or dancing around a campfire in their underwear, proudly proclaiming, “Look what I created!” and I didn’t know why. Dismissthat’s why. In one of his most legendary (and Oscar-nominated) roles, Tom Hanks gives a masterclass in “acting with nothing” as Chuck Noland, a traveling FedEx employee whose cargo plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean. He miraculously survives, but remains stranded and alone on a desert island for years.

With nothing but his wits, a few fuselages, some debris, and a handful of FedEx packages that washed up with him, Noland learns to survive on the island, making fire, building shelter, and finding food. He fends off loneliness and keeps his mind sharp by talking to Wilson, a volleyball player and his best friend. After hitting rock bottom, Noland finally begins planning his escape from the island, while back home, his fiancée, Kelly (Helen Hunt), and everyone he knows, grieve and move on with their lives.

Dismiss has become the quintessential “desert island” film, and is so powerful because of the way it allows the audience to feel both the isolation and fear that Noland experiences, as well as feeling like they’re getting a glimpse of a man who is truly alone, driven by Hanks’ uninhibited solo performance.
