The Chicago Blackhawks have high hopes for Alex Vlasic and his NHL potential. Vlasic is one of the few very promising defensemen to skate with the Blackhawks in recent seasons. Artyom Levshunov showed his talent and Sam Rinzel made a good impression from the start. However, Vlasic may already be the team’s most important defender.

Vlasic has developed into a quality defenseman in the NHL. He took on more and more responsibilities over the seasons. And he showed his ability to contribute on the penalty kill. Although he is only 24 years old, he is a leader in the locker room. That was made evident Sunday when he wore an A on his sweater as an alternate captain against the Anaheim Ducks.

It’s a great honor, especially for a player of his age. Added to this is his link with the Blackhawks franchise. He grew up in the Chicago suburbs and followed the team growing up. All of this made this decision even more surreal. However, he remained rather humble when talking about it.

“It’s a little weird, honestly. The first thing I noticed when I was coming to games and you see guys like Keith, Seabrook, Sharp, Kaner, all these guys wearing the A’s, it’s kind of crazy to think that kids come to games and look at me the same way,” the Blackhawks defenseman said, via reporter Charlie Roumeliotis.

“I don’t feel like I’m that good or much of a leader compared to these guys, but it’s definitely a pinch-me moment. I’m very grateful for it. It’s a really cool opportunity.”

Vlasic did not score a point against the Ducks on Sunday night. However, he played a big role in their victory. He skated for just over 24 minutes of ice time against Anaheim. He blocked four shots and delivered two hits in the 2-1 overtime victory.

The Blackhawks showed promise early in the season. Vlasic is one of the main reasons why Chicago has had big wins. It appears he is becoming a complete player and an important presence in the locker room this season.
