With flexible head options, only the upper portions of the bed have independent range of motion. The foot of the bed is always fixed on both sides. With split options, the head and foot of the bed can move independently. Either option makes great sense for couples who want to choose individual firmness levels and the angle at which they sleep or relax. In the spirit of understanding the full range of offerings for couples (and having never tested a flex-head option before), I ended up going with the flex-head king.

I don’t think I would do it again, as I found I preferred the flexible head more during my waking hours than for sleeping. I used my side to sit and read while my husband slept. However, if I wanted my feet to be in weightless mode and he wanted everything to be level, we needed to be on the same page, since the bottom of the bed was still connected. Having the slot only at the top of the bed took some getting used to, as it was very easy to turn over and feel like you were diving headfirst into a chasm. Not to mention, with the flexible headboard, you’ll need special sheets to fit the mattress slot. Making this bed will take practice, as it almost had me in tears on several occasions, struggling with each fitted part on the separate top sides. For this reason, I recommend couples stick to fully split sizes if they’re going for a king size.

Where people often get confused when it comes to smart beds is considering the entire setup with an adjustable base. A smart mattress and a smart box spring are actually two separate purchases intended to be used together. So, let’s get this straight: the range of motion you see with smart beds can only be achieved by using an adjustable base. Since adjustable bases can be controlled via remotes and apps, they are part of the smart bed experience. That being said, believe it or not, they are not included in your purchase. So if you envision your new smart bed being able to adjust the firmness, move up and down, and act as your personal masseuse, you’ll only be able to achieve this with an adjustable base.

I chose to test the Rejuvenate with Personal Comfort’s Power-Flex 4 base, which is the most feature-rich base the brand offers. You don’t have to buy an adjustable base from Personal Comfort, but the brand often offers bundle promotions. The Power-Flex 4 offers standard head and foot movement, zero gravity, an anti-snore head lift, head tilt to adjust the angle of your pillow, three massage settings, under-bed lighting, and enhanced lumbar support. Massage is something that jumped out at me, as it’s the epitome of a luxury upgrade in my book. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up caring. These three settings caused the entire bed to vibrate at increasingly stronger speeds. It felt more like an extra-large vibrating plate than a gentle rocking to sleep. The lights under the bed were handy and the remote had a built-in flashlight. However, make sure you take the correct remote control, because the box spring and mattress have different ones. And each side has its own set of remotes, meaning you could have a total of four if you don’t sync both sides to a single set.

The Personal Comfort app can help you avoid all that clutter and fumbling in the dark. My husband and I had downloaded the app on each of our devices so we could set up our respective sides of the bed. He had no problem setting it up, but my side was a little more cumbersome because the app seemed to mix up which sleeper was which. While I chalk this up to likely user error, the app’s UI is simple and easy to use, but much less flashy than other smart beds I’ve come across. That’s partly because this smart bed isn’t equipped to track your sleep data. It allows you to change the firmness and angle of the adjustable base and activate the massage functions if you wish. But most of the options in the left drop-down list are articles with hyperlinks that take you away from the app, like the user manual and troubleshooting pages.

Ready, set, go

One of the main marketing points of Personal Comfort as a brand is the affordable price, which of course ultimately depends on whether or not you get a base with your Rejuvenate. Still, comparing apples to apples with a competitor I tested, the Sleep Number P6 and its FlexFit 3 base, Personal Comfort and its Power-Flex 4 base were actually about $1,400 more expensive. Personal Comfort is currently running a promotion where you can get a free BedJet 3 cooling system with your purchase. You also get the option of specialized flexible head sizing with the Rejuvenate, including queen size. I haven’t seen this anywhere else.

Would I buy Rejuvenate if I had the choice? If I was looking for a good starter smart bed and didn’t need sleep tracking, sure. But I would help with the frame first and the mattress second. The more time I spend testing smart beds, the more I understand that it’s a package that includes adjustable frames and smart mattresses: for the complete experience, you really need both. I also find that smart mattresses can sometimes feel (no pun intended) like an air mattress, which makes me yearn for something that has a more traditional feel. The Rejuvenate does well, feeling more like a traditional memory foam mattress with the ability to increase your firmness level. However, as I said, it still won’t be as firm as a truly firm traditional mattress.

So if you’re looking for a softer, foam-filled bed without any sleep tracking, the Rejuvenate would make sense. But with the premise of a smart bed being an all-in-one approach to sleep tracking, flexibility in firmness, and luxury that you just can’t get with a regular mattress (the weightlessness of the zero-gravity setting, for example), this smart bed just isn’t quite there.
