One person dead following raging overnight in Oakham

One person is dead after a major fire broke out at an Oakham home shortly after midnight on Wednesday.
The massive fire broke out at a home on Skyline Drive around 12:45 a.m., according to the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
When firefighters arrived, a Rutland police officer had already attempted to enter the home despite the smoke and flames, but was forced out due to the conditions.
Because temperatures hovered around the single digits, pipes froze and fire crews were forced to call water trucks to the scene to continually hose down the house.
Once the fire was under control, crews determined the only adult resident was dead.
“Our hearts go out to the family who lost a loved one this morning,” said Oakham Fire Chief Timothy Howe. “It’s a sad day for them and for the community.”
The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Oakham Fire Department, Oakham Police, State Police Fire Investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office and State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester District Attorney’s Office.
