OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed this week that the company is building an entirely new AI-focused device. He says it will contrast sharply with the clutter and chaos of our phones and apps. Indeed, he likened its use to “sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake and in the mountains and just enjoying the peace and quiet.” But understanding yourself in context and analyzing your habits, moods, and routines feels more intimate than most people have with their loved ones, let alone anything material.

Its framing obscures a very different reality. A device designed to constantly monitor your life, collecting details about where you are, what you are doing, how you speak, and more from choking sounds. Having an electronic observer that absorbs every nuance of your behavior and adapts to your life may seem OK, until you remember what that data goes through to provide the analysis.
