Our Top-Rated Nugget Ice Maker Is Getting a Mini Version
If you like the Opal Nugget Ice Maker as much as webut imagine that coveted, crunchy ice cream in spaces that can’t accommodate a full-size machine, you’re in luck. GE Profile will launch a mini version of the viral ice cream machine later this year. We got a sneak peek of the machine at KBIS, the kitchen and bath industry’s mega show in Orlando, Florida.
The original Opal was launched in 2015 and ushered in a nugget ice maker phenomenon. Others have jumped into the burgeoning category, and we’ve tested several to curate our list of best ice makers in 2026.
Main differences between mini and full-size
We have recorded at least five colors at KBIS.
Beyond its smaller size – about half the overall dimensions and water tank size – the Opal Mini features a top-fill ice maker, eliminating the need for a side tank.
The Opal Mini can produce up to 34 pounds of nugget per day, about the same as the original full-size model, although it will require more empties and refills to do so. It includes a filter for cleaner tasting ice cream and has an automatic descaling function, just like its big brother.
We’ve spotted five colors that the Mini Nugget Ice Maker will be available in.
GE Profile is launching two versions of the Mini: The standard Mini and the Mini Pro.
- GE Profile Opal Mini: Top water filler that ditches the side tank for an ultra-compact footprint and a flip-up front panel for easy cleaning and descaling.
- GE Profile Opal Mini Pro: Premium features such as a side tank for fewer refills, an anti-limescale water filter and a stainless steel spoon with an external holder. Homeowners can also take advantage of Wi-Fi connectivity through SmartHQ for scheduling, maintenance alerts, and even customizing the ice bin light color for added style.
The colors on display at KBIS were vast. We’ve seen at least seven shades, including black, white, stainless steel, mint green, red, yellow and pink. The Compact Nugget Ice Maker will be available at geappliances.com, Amazon and select retailers for a suggested retail price of $299.
