Sliding down an ice track at speeds approaching 90 mph, luge competitors at this year’s Winter Olympics are expected to provide plenty of thrills for those watching in person and on television.

The sleds have no brakes and are controlled solely by the riders’ body weight, so accidents can – and do – happen. Even at the highest level of competition.

Medals are awarded in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and there is also a mixed team relay race.

All luge events at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games will take place at the Cortina Sliding Center in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
