Five people were killed Wednesday evening after a collision between a train and a vehicle in Gary, in Indiana.

Just after 10 p.m., the South Shore Line in the direction east of 133 was arrested just west of Miller Station after the accident.

According to the president of the South Shore Line, Mike Noland, the train with 32 passengers approached the intersection of the 12 and 7th street in the United States when a vehicle with five occupants traveling south on the 7th street went around the doors and on the way to the train.

The Gary police department confirmed that the five people inside the vehicle died. The identities of the victims were not released on Thursday.

Passengers and train crews were not injured.

“Put aside the fact that we always want people to be extremely cautious around trains and railways and expect a train on a track at any time – there is a tragedy when five human beings are lost and that our hearts go to the family of relatives who have suffered a loss in this accident,” said Noland.

Traffic was interrupted in the region while the crews evaluated the situation.
