Yorgos Lanthimos is back with another mind-blowing drama, starring Emma Stone in the lead. In Bugonia, Stone plays the CEO of a pharmaceutical company who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists who believe she is actually an alien intent on destroying Earth. Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis also star.

Martin Scorsese directed this 3-hour biopic about Jordan Belfort, the young stockbroker who became very rich at a very young age, only to be arrested by the FBI for fraud and market manipulation. It’s already an interesting premise and thanks to the enigmatic cast, led by Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan alongside Jonah Hill as a deranged sidekick, this film never slows down.

Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel explores fandom gone too far. James Caan plays novelist Paul Sheldon, who ends up being held hostage by “his biggest fan”, Annie Wilkes. There’s barely any blood or gore here, but it’s absolutely a top-notch horror film. Kathy Bates won the Oscar for her breakthrough role as Annie Wilkes.

Spy soldier handyman tailor
Based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a slow-burn Cold War spy drama about an intelligence leak within the British secret service and the man searching for the Soviet mole. The writing and directing are effective on all fronts, and the stacked cast elevates the experience to a whole new level. Gary Oldman stars alongside John Hurt, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones and Stephen Graham.

The Fall Guy follows a stuntman named Colt Seavers who is sent on a mission to find a missing movie star. The key to the success of this film lies in the chemistry between its two stars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Great action sequences and lots of laughs make this a very good popcorn movie. And yes, if this sounds familiar, it’s inspired by the 1980s TV show of the same name starring Lee Majors.

The result is a surprisingly energetic, heartfelt and uplifting film.

Taking inspiration from the beloved 2010 animated classic, this new adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon delivers. Thanks to the powerful CGI effects, expansive world-building, and attention to character detail, this is a rare example of a live-action remake that improves on its animated counterpart.

The drama is tense and the action is grueling, which makes sense given that Taylor Sheridan wrote the screenplay and Dune visionary Denis Villeneuve directed the film.

The film 3:10 to Yuma is a modern-day epic western. It’s a remake of the 1957 western of the same name (and both are based on a short story by Elmore Leonard). James Mangold directed the 2007 version in which Christian Bale plays Dan Evans, a rancher who is responsible for guiding outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) to a train that will transport him to prison. As you might expect, this is not an easy task. Ben Foster. who is excellent as the villainous Charlie Prince, also stars alongside Peter Fonda, Gretchen Mol and Alan Tudyk.

In Point Break, a band of renegade surfers don the masks of former presidents and rob banks. And they’re pretty good at it too. Enter FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), a young and brash law enforcement officer who infiltrates and infiltrates the group and closes in on their leader, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), to bring them down. Kathryn Bigelow directed this over-the-top action film, which was a memorable role for Swayze and a stellar turn for Reeves.

It’s a little crazy to think that animated films weren’t recognized at the Academy Awards until 2001, but Shrek deserved the win. The vocal performances from Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy are on point and deliver delightful comedy and memorable pop culture moments. The film helped usher in a new era of CGI effects and put DreamWorks on the map. More than two decades later, it’s still a very enjoyable watch.

Look, I’m not here to discuss which Harry Potter film is the best in the franchise. The series is full of awesome stuff. However, the third installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, really showed the world how great a Harry Potter story could be. Not to mention it introduced Gary Oldman’s rebellious wizard, Sirius Black. And you really can’t go wrong putting Oldman in anything.
