Philadelphia scores with first queer women’s sports bar

Female sports gain popularity each year, and not only are many fans queer, but many players are too, which is why Philadelphia should open its very first queer female bar.

Native of Philly Chivonn Anderson is about to open Marsha’s, a brand new bar and sports location on South Street at the end of the summer which will be an inclusive space for the LGBTQ + community and women to enjoy the sport.

“Marsha’s is more than a bar; it is a dynamic and inclusive space where everyone can feel welcome, safe and seen,” said Anderson NBC Philadelphia. “The place offers a dynamic mixture of female sports, local philly teams and film and queer television, all associated with a menu of high food and drink,” shared Marsha in a press release. “Whether you applaud your favorite team or just seek a place to be yourself, Marsha is your home far from home.”

Anderson is not the only one to think that female sports bars including a winning format are a winning format. In fact, he had such a good success at the Portland sports bra that they are opening four franchise locations across the country.

The name of the bar, a tribute to Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender activist of gay liberation who was a leading figure in the uprising of Stonewall, is emblematic of the ethics planned for the bar: celebrating Queer history and welcoming everyone.

“South Street was the only place where I felt likely to grow,” said Anderson, who grew up in the neighborhood in the 90s. “Create Marsha at the corner of South Street and Passyunk Ave feels like a full circle moment. It is a question of building the kind of bar in which everyone feels welcome.”

There are currently only 36 lesbian bars in the United States, but Marsha will bring this number to 37.
