Minneapolis police have disputed a Somali daycare’s claim that “important documents” disproving fraudulent activity were stolen.

The Nokomis DayCare Center said a burglar broke into the building Tuesday through the kitchen in the back of the facility, rummaging through the main office and stealing documents related to its operations, but police say no report was filed, according to the New York Post:

Nasrulah Mohamed, director of Nakomis Day Care Center, told reporters that a suspect entered through the kitchen at the back of the facility, damaging a wall and breaking into the building’s office on Tuesday. He said the alleged prowler stole “important documents,” including children’s registration information, employee documents and checkbooks.

However, “no losses were reported to police,” according to a preliminary report from Minneapolis police. MPD noted that the center later provided additional information, but that the updated police report was not immediately available.

The Nokomis DayCare Center provided video of a hole in the wall of what may have been a utility closet.

Mohamed claimed the burglary could be due to Nick Shirley’s recent viral report, where the citizen journalist visited various Minnesota daycares, alleging fraudulent activity. The Nokomis DayCare Center was not included in the Shirley report.

“This is devastating news, and we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community, when a video made by a particular individual is behind all of this,” he said.

Mohamed added that the center has received “hateful” and “threatening” messages since the Shirley report.

“It’s scary and exhausting,” he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson also revealed earlier this month that half of the $18 billion in federal welfare funds, which have supported 14 Minnesota-run programs since 2018, were lost to fraud.

“Minnesota has become a magnet for fraud, so much so that we have developed a fraudulent tourism industry — people coming to our state solely to exploit and defraud its programs,” Thompson said. “This is a deeply disturbing reality that all Minnesotans should understand.”
