Buying an 8GB laptop in 2025 is a mistake

8 GB had a good long term. At the end of the 2000s, it was the default specification on premium machines, and even when it was relegated to the budgetary models of years later, it generally did the work.
This time is over. In 2025, 16 GB or better is the only reasonable option for anyone cares about the daily performance of his laptop, longevity or real multitasking.
The neck of memory of memory
If you have experienced the above symptoms, this discrepancy and stuttering is due to the fact that your machine is short of RAM and has been forced to use your SSD as a slow emergency memory – a process that reserves the performance and reactivity of the system.
Part of the problem is that modern software eats memory as I eat ice. Web browsers cache more than before, and creative tools bring RAM for live previews and AI features that you may not even want.
Your favorite applications (or the ones you need to use for work) such as Chrome, teams and slacks are designed to deliberately charge the memory in order to keep the experience.
And this is the underlying problem. Leaving the memory unused is a waste. But running is even worse.
Modern operating systems are wondering with memory management, but it is a magic tip that is so far so far. If you start with 8 GB, the operating system cannot evoke the additional slim capacity, and the formerly catchy experience is putting on a stingy ramp.
The problem is worse on the type of budget laptops which generally offer 8 GB optional. When the RAM is in shortage, the CPU with low specification and the SSD must intensify and take more load, but they simply cannot maintain the necessary pace for things to feel quickly.
Where 8 GBs always make sense
16 GB will always be better, but there are times when 8 GB is tolerable if you keep your expectations modest. MacBook Apple-Silicon, older generation broadcasts with 8 GB of RAM can often manage light use and can be a good purchase for young students.
Chromebooks are also simple enough for the choice to be between 8 GB and 16 GB, but between an 8 functional GB and a barely usable 4 GB.
There is also the problem of integrated graphics, because on many laptops, the graphic processing unit (GPU) shares the memory of the system. Launch a game, an accelerated 3D application or even connect one or two additional monitors, and you lose a piece of RAM with graphics.
With 8 GB, it leaves too little for everything else. With 16 GB or better, you have a margin that keeps the reactive system when the GPU comes to call.
The upgrade is also important, and although some laptops can have an added memory on the line, most are now shipped with a welded memory which cannot be upgraded. If you buy 8 GB today, you will see a short shelf life for your device.
Exhaust at 16 GB and you will extend its useful years, delay your next replacement and save money on the life of the device.
Even Apple has finally kissed 16 GB. After years defending 8 GB on entry -level devices, Mac Maker laptops now start with 16 GB. It is almost a signal as clear as you get for what the minimum memory should be for a modern laptop.
Purchase advice
Treat 16 GB as the reference base for general use. This happily covers study, office work, web, media, light photo changes and some professional tools. If you compile code, change high resolution video, run local AI models or keep dozens of heavy active applications, 32 GB is a critical upgrade that should not be ignored.
Storage choices also count, but the fastest SSD cannot compensate for insufficient memory.
The retailers will always push 8 GB to anchor the lower prices. In fact, we wrote on this same problem in 2021, but many manufacturers still use 8 GB as a basic specification. My advice is to jump these models and wait for a sale that carries 16 GB at hand, because the additional cost buys a more fluid experience and less compromise tomorrow.
Think of the frustration and the opportunity cost of the time spent closing the tabs, restarting applications or apologizing for jerky calls.
In 2025, an 8 GB laptop was a false economy. Invest in more memory now or pay it with your patience later.
