President Trump Brokers Last-Minute, Short-Term Deal Preventing Partial Government Shutdown – RedState

For now at least, a partial government shutdown has been averted at the last minute. As RedState wrote earlier Thursday, the U.S. Senate rejected passage of a cloture (test) vote for a minibus that would have funded the six remaining bills for fiscal year 2026. The deadline to secure government funding is midnight Friday before the shutdown begins.

We also saw that there were still chess pieces in play, with President Donald Trump holding ongoing meetings with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in hopes of finding a solution to the impasse Democrats find themselves in over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

In the latest breaking news update, the president and Schumer reached a deal to split the DHS portion and put that on hold while passing the other five bills:

The deal would see the DHS funding bill removed from the broader package of six bills. Schumer and Democrats insisted that if the bill was sidelined, they would vote for the five remaining bills, which include funding for the Pentagon.

Here are the details we know so far:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and President Donald Trump worked on a deal from Wednesday night through Thursday evening after the Senate’s top Democrat made several funding demands and the White House accused Schumer of blocking a meeting with rank-and-file Democrats.

“The separation of the five bipartisan bills requested by Democrats + the DHS by two weeks [continuing resolution] was accepted,” Schumer said in a statement.

Their agreement also provides a short-term funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), for two weeks to keep the agency funded while lawmakers negotiate restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Trump wrote on his Truth Social account:

“America is setting records in every area, and our growth numbers are among the best on record,” he wrote. “The only thing that can slow down our country is another long and damaging government shutdown.”

“I am working hard with Congress to ensure that we are able to fully fund the government, without delay,” the president continued. “Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to secure funding for the vast majority of government through September, while at the same time granting an expansion to the Department of Homeland Security (including the all-important Coast Guard, which we are expanding and rebuilding like never before). Hopefully, Republicans and Democrats will give a much-needed bipartisan ‘YES’.”
