President Trump’s ‘Peace Through Strength’ Moment – RedState

Recently, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed concerns about a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan. She described such an event as a “situation threatening the survival” of Japan. This perspective is rooted in geographic reality, given that Japan’s closest island is just 67 miles from Taiwan. Nonetheless, China reacted aggressively, interpreting his comments as almost the equivalent of a declaration of war. In fact, one Chinese official even suggested that Prime Minister Takaichi be assassinated.

This escalation in discourse between China and Japan highlights the volatile situation in East Asia and highlights how easily tensions could escalate, particularly for the United States.

Japan remains one of the United States’ most important allies and hosts 55,000 American troops. Any aggressive moves by Beijing toward Tokyo would be a major concern for U.S. interests.

It is in America’s interest to prevent tensions from rising while opposing China’s growing assertiveness. The current administration is actively monitoring these developments and responding appropriately.

President Trump recently signed legislation requiring the United States to review and update its guidelines regarding Taiwan every five years. This measure directly responds to China’s clear intentions to change the status of Taiwan, which destabilizes the region and poses a threat to countries like Japan. Importantly, the legislation does not change the U.S. “one China” policy, designed to facilitate trade and maintain peace while avoiding direct confrontation. Although this policy recognizes Taiwan as part of China, the new law serves as a warning that future provocations could prompt America to reconsider its position – a prudent precaution.

Additionally, as Modern Diplomacy reports, US military exercises in the Pacific have become a strategic tool aimed at deterring Chinese aggression and reshaping the military balance in the Indo-Pacific region to China’s disadvantage. The same source notes that the US presence in Southeast Asia could soon include establishing garrisons on islands near the South China Sea.

The Trump administration has also worked to build coalitions with other countries. Notably, in November, the White House formed a joint task force with the Philippines, a staunch US ally, to counter Chinese actions in the South China Sea.

Defense cooperation with Vietnam has also increased – a significant achievement given Vietnam’s hesitance to become involved in foreign conflicts, particularly given its history of war with China as recently as 1979 and its emphasis on maintaining its sovereignty.

The president’s recently released national security strategy document details the administration’s overall approach. The NSS asserts that the United States will oppose China in both security and economic terms, while also urging wealthy East Asian allies (like South Korea and Japan) to invest more in their own defense capabilities.

President Trump has made significant efforts to recalibrate America’s trade relationship with China, recognizing Beijing’s central role in the global trade network. He used tariffs as a negotiating tool when necessary.

China’s dominance in the market for rare earth metals, which are crucial for making smartphones and semiconductors, has prompted new measures.

In response to China’s imposition of controls on rare earth exports, President Trump announced a 100% tariff on Chinese imports, in an effort to strengthen America’s negotiating position.

Another key move to counter Beijing came earlier this year, when Trump and the Justice Department approved a merger between Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Juniper Networks. The goal was to create a competitive U.S. force in the vital area of 5G technology. According to Axios, a senior national security official explained that the HPE-Juniper merger served national interests by strengthening national capabilities and was essential to countering Huawei and China.

Huawei is currently the world’s largest 5G player, controlling almost 30% of the global market, a figure that far exceeds any US competitor. This is particularly concerning given widespread suspicions that Huawei’s technology contains vulnerabilities and backdoors that China could exploit. Over the past decade, the United States has actively discouraged its allies from adopting Huawei technology due to these risks.

The challenges posed by China are sometimes overshadowed by other global crises, such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza or domestic concerns about narcoterrorism. China, for its part, would prefer the world’s attention to be directed elsewhere. In the current context, the threats to freedom and peace are varied and complex.

President Trump’s priority has been securing American strength as a means to establish stability and prevent greater conflict. Although he has shown determination elsewhere, such as with Iran, he does not seek confrontation with China. Following China’s recent escalation against Japan, Trump contacted Prime Minister Takaichi, encouraging him to help de-escalate the situation. The overriding objective remains maintaining peace with one of the world’s major nuclear powers.

Unlike some previous leaders, President Trump has no illusions about China’s intentions. Globalization and free trade policies have not transformed China into a responsible international actor; instead, they allowed it to become a powerful entity bent on manipulating the world’s systems and continuing its domination.

Through these determined efforts, President Trump is working to protect both America and the rest of the world. In time, these initiatives could constitute his most important foreign policy legacy.
