Protect transgender scientists | Science

Transgender and non -compliant people (TGNC) are the main target of the Trump administration. Multiple decrees seek to erase TGNC protections; Mandate dialing gender identity; and prohibit diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) (1). Changes in federal funding policies linked to TGNC individuals and Dei threaten to reduce academic diversity and freedom (2). Institutions have hesitated to resist, but for many TGNC scientists – in particular colored TGNC individuals, immigrants and those who have a handicap – invisibility is not an option. Anticipated obedience (3, 4), and even the passive aldecit, is insufficient; Institutions must abandon neutrality and defend targeted communities to minimize additional damage (5, 6). As a Queer and TGNC scientists, we call researchers at all levels – from undergraduate students to university presidents – to take direct, coherent and rapid action.
