Proton users can now add ’emergency’ contacts for backup access

In the event of an emergency, you can now designate certain trusted people who can access your Proton account. According to yesterday’s announcement post, the new Proton emergency access feature supports up to five trust … with some warnings.

On the one hand, you can only designate people who have their own protons accounts because they will have to use their proton account to access yours. With the access granted, a contact of trust can then connect to your Proton account each time you are not available or invalid, whether because of travel, illness or (in the worst case).

Access to emergencies will send you a notification whenever a trust contact tries to access your account, and if you do not respond explicitly with a refusal, access will be granted. You can choose whether the contacts can access immediately or if they should wait a number of days, weeks or months before access to access.

The other Big Catch is that access to emergencies is only available to pay Proton customers.
