Gamers Are Furious About the Censorship of NSFW Games—and They’re Fighting Back

Commercial organizations through the game industry and the players denounce the censorship campaigns that take place through Steam and Itch.io in order to help developers who have been unjustly affected. The push against the content of adults is motivated by the collective rejection of a Australian conservative group, whose pressure of the payment processors forced the platforms to massage the content of the NSFW deindex. In the wake of these crimes, which delete research games, developers rush to understand if their games have been affected and why.
On platforms like Bluesky, users compile lists of censored artists with NSFW pieces and unfathomable itching pages, whether games or comics, many of which identify their work like LGBTQ + or Kink. Wired was able to find several of these pages via Google, which were all marked by their creators in this document as LGBT and NSFW, but not with ITCH’s search tools.
According to the International Game Developers Association, a non -profit organization that supports game developers, this type of censorship disproportionately affects developers who are queer, trans and people of color, affecting the income and reputation of a creator.
In a declaration given to Wired, executive director Jakin Vela said that IGDA is “seriously alarmed” by crimes and payment disturbances on the theme of adults on Steam and Itch. “On a global and politically scale, we are at a crossroads for the rights of developers, freedom of creation and the responsibility of platforms,” he said. “The right to make mature games with legal adult content is a creative right, as is the right to tell stories about war, death or love.”
In recent months, Collective Shout has campaigned to obtain “rape and incest” games deleted online platforms. The group began to apply pressure to payment processors such as Visa and Mastercard; Valve has removed hundreds of titles, some of which included incest.
Other developers, however, such as the creators of Horror Game Vile: ExhumedSay that their games have not violated these standards. “”Vile: Exhumed was not prohibited for its use of gore in narration or violent themes, “wrote Cara Cadaver in an update.” It was prohibited for `sexual content with representations of real people ”, who, if you played it, you know, everything is involved, which makes it even worse. I refuse to censor or make changes to the game, I will not tell a story about these subjects so that people who do not understand feel more comfortable. “Valve did not respond to a request for comments.
Meanwhile, ITCH has united all the contents of NSFW adult. According to Gamefile, this applies to more than 20,000 games. “Our ability to treat payments is essential for each creator on our platform,” wrote the founder Leaf Corcoran at the time. “To ensure that we can continue to work and provide a market for all developers, we must prioritize our relationship with our payment partners and take immediate measures to compliance.” Itch did not respond to a request for comments.
The company has suspended its scratch payments on 18+ content “in the foreseeable future” and “actively contacts other payment processors which are more willing to work with this type of content”.
Reached to comment, Stripe spokesperson Casey Becker said that the company does not comment on users. “In general, we take measures when we conclude that users violate our conditions of use,” explains Becker. “We do not support the content of adults.” The company has a long -standing policy not to work with adult content services.
