The 2025 open championship continues on Saturday while the move takes control of Royal Portrush with two golf towers (hopefully), difficult and unpredictable, one of the most notable courses in the United Kingdom. Although the weather was a beast all week, everyone on the field hopes that the conditions can light around 3 so that they can make an effort similar to that that Scottie Scheffler published when he marked the lowest round of his major championship career with a 64.
With only 70 men out of the massive open field making the cup, the battle will continue on the banks of Northern Ireland with 16 men – those with less than seven Scheffler shots – in competition for one of the most prestigious titles of sport: the Golfer Champion of the year.
Royal Portrush is organizing for the third time in the history of the oldest world golf championship with the Claret Jug which should be awarded outside of Scotland or England in a rare circumstance. The course will continue to press most remaining in the field, in particular given Rory McILroy – making his return this week – has set up bad laps on these links.
McILroy, 16 years old, set the course record in Portrush with a 61 at the time. Despite this, the last time the open was hosted on this site in 2019, he immediately expelled a 79. Barely 24 hours later, he rebounded to draw a 65 – a swing of 14 strokes from one day to the next. Bryson Dechambeau almost accomplished the same thing this week that he barely slipped inside the cutting line. In other words, if a winner of the great home in a career and a native son – plus a modern champion – cannot be tested by Royal Portrush, no one on the field this week is sure.
The action continues on Saturday, the round 3 preparing the land for the last 18 holes of the last major of this year. The land is filled with fans, and they are undoubtedly eager to see how Scheffler, McILroy, Shane Lowry, Robert Macintyre, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm and others behave through the last two towers of the open.
